Centered Riding®

Centered Riding® is a way of improving in any discipline of riding. Whether it's dressage, jumping, hunt seat, saddle seat, western pleasure - Centered Riding is about finding balance in the saddle without undo tension by working with the body and the mind through bodywork and imagery. As such, it's a way to make any discipline of riding easier to do.

Centered Riding® was developed by Sally Swift and is now promoted through Centered Riding® Inc, an organization which qualifies instructors to teach Centered Riding.

This is the full blown, weekend long Centered Riding® Clinic! If you can come in Friday afternoon and stay until Sunday night, you'll have experienced a 'full immersion' in Centered Riding.

Friday night will start with a discussion of Awareness and how the Concept of the 4 Basics came to be. There will also be some hands on experience as well so that you can begin using the 4 Basics right from the start.

To start with, some things that'll be covered are:

  • the 4 Basics of Centered Riding - basically the heart of all riding,

  • habits - how to get good ones and let go of bad ones,

  • alignment - that illusive ideal that makes riding without tension possible,

  • saddle fit - something that'll make life a whole lot easier,

  • how to develop a following seat - which makes riding a lot more comfy,

  • how to start and stop using the breath.

During the second groundwork session, topics will cover:

  • mirroring between rider and horse - how to hear what the horse is 'saying' about you

  • flowing from the center - strengthening your cues

  • position left and right from the center - for turns, and later for lateral work

  • steering from the center on arcs and lines - which leads to a deeper seat and more subtle cues

  • maintaining a safe distance while with others

The third groundwork session topics will cover:

  • rein contact - what your horse feels through the reins

  • containing and releasing the horse - allows for change in stride

  • the bridge - quiet strength

  • the bubble - maintaining a safe distance and providing security for the horse

In the last groundwork session, depending on how things are going, topics might cover:

  • lateral work

  • canter

  • jumping

The clinic will end with a final Q&A and wrap up.

If the clinic starts on a Friday night, lessons will be given after the 2nd and 4th topics. If the clinic starts on Saturday morning, lessons will be given after every topic.

If you've got a tight schedule, or want to try out Centered Riding without hopping on a horse,  attending the first groundwork session of a Centered Riding Clinic may be just the thing for you.   You'll get the Basics of Centered Riding and be able to take home what you've learned.

The Basics of Centered Riding®    accommodations
[1-day Mastery Clinics]

If you've got a tight schedule, 1-day small doses of Centered Riding may just be what you're looking for. In this clinic, the Basics of Centered Riding are learned first on the ground and then applied in the saddle. If you've never been to a Centered Riding clinic or would like a refresher, this is the clinic for you.

Some things that'll be covered are:

  • the 4 Basics of Centered Riding - basically the heart of all riding,

  • habits - how to get good ones and let go of bad ones,

  • alignment - that illusive ideal that makes riding without tension possible,

  • saddle fit - something that'll make life a whole lot easier,

  • how to develop a following seat - which makes riding a lot more comfy,

  • how to start and stop using the breath.

  • and probably some other things as well, depending upon what presents itself.

The clinic will begin with 1 1/2 hours of groundwork and awareness exercises which you'll use and develop further when you ride later in a group riding lesson.

"The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities."
